RHINO EVACUATION

If you have been in Geneva for any length of time you have probably passed by the unique building with its red “horn” affixed onto the exterior wall like a phallic masthead on the boulevard des Philosophes near the Geneva University. Perhaps if you are of certain age and character you have may have also attended a few “alternative” all night gigs, in the fire hazard basement as I did once in my rebellious youth. However, July 23rd marked an end to the fun and free living of almost 20 years as the handful of residents of the building were evacuated. All the hullabaloo brings to question to what legal rights are or should be “squatters” entitled?

I think everyone knows that accommodation is scarce in Geneva, or at least reasonably priced lodging. (If one has the means agents will be falling over themselves to share with you their luxury listings) However, should unoccupied buildings be free game for any kind of dissident who prefers to live the nonconformist lifestyle? Not only does the city’s policy of allowing “squatting” seem contrary the rights of the property owners who have invested hard-earned money and who, because, of their unforeseen tenants, find themselves with a decaying monstrosity offering no return investment. Additionally, what kind of message does this policy send to the thousands of blue-collar workers who pay their rent responsibly although making ends meet each month is a challenge? One could, of course, also cite the potential dangers and health risks to the self proclaimed residents as well. I, however, am not so sure that I am concerned with the welfare of people who believe that they are entitled to something for nothing.
